They say life is an adventure. And I have a saying that ‘the road is long’. You’d be surprised how many times the same things in life come back to visit you, but in totally different stages.
Almost 10 years ago, I was approached by the media department of The (now defunct) New York Titans of the National Lacrosse League to art direct and design the official game program and other media items for their inaugural 2007 Season. That was my first creative break into the lacrosse industry.
I remember discussing and going over creative concepts for the program cover by looking through many photos taken by their sports photographer. One of them stood out as a clear winner. It was of Syracuse stand-out, Casey Powell, or “CP”.
A blank page towards the end had to be filled and we found another of Casey that worked out.
About 10 years later, Casey announces his decision to retire from professional lacrosse after the 2016 Major League Lacrosse season. Having established a marketing and content production partnership with Major League Lacrosse during the 2016 season, I got a phone call from the President of the Florida Launch wanting to honor Casey’s last home game with the piece of art and video that we did of him.

Pictures of the ceremony honoring Casey were taken. He was presented with the framed original, while the video we did was shown on the jumbo-tron of the stadium after the game.
I’ve never met Casey Powell in person, but we’ve had a our share of communications and contacts via social-media. While I wasn’t there in attendance, looking at the ceremony pics made me think back to my first break in combining lacrosse and art, and then my decision to start The Art of Lax™ a few years after, which was basically on a whim. It’s amazing how Casey fits in both cases and it’s truly an awesome adventure with the art and design, looking back.
The road is long. Travel well.
