“If you take it seriously, they will take you seriously.” -Tom LaPadula
In grade school, I made sure requirements were met on time. But that didn’t mean I enjoyed every subject I had. I was a doodler in class. Occasionally, or A LOT of times, I would discreetly draw in my notebooks when a class was not capturing my attention. It turned out that I wasn’t discreet at all, as my teachers knew what I was doing during class. So when Dr. Timothy Burns, the Headmaster of the St. David’s School, back then, stopped me in the hallway to ask if I wanted to illustrate the cover of the VERY FIRST yearbook for the school in 1992, I gladly accepted.
Recently, I found it while cleaning up my studio one weekend.
I cringe while looking at it now. But looking back, I can say that, that was my first piece of published work. The client being my grade school – St. David’s School (NYC).
After graduation, and high-school, then college, I always kept in touch with my grade school. And they knew what I was SERIOUSLY pursuing. These days I’m still asked to artistically contribute to the school’s publications on a regular basis.
BE SERIOUS, because you never know who is watching. Happy Friday!
