A few years ago I wrote an article about negotiation. As a business founder and owner, negotiation is something I do on a daily basis, wether it’s on the phone, email or face-to-face meetings. I remember back in my senior year of art school, they tried to teach us ‘the art of negotiation’. That same year, I remember one of my family trips to Morocco and the first time I saw negotiation being done in the “Bazaars” or “Souks” inside the medina walls of Marrakech and Fez – both aggressive and respectful. Every negotiation is different and handled on a case-to-case, basis. It’s something that can’t be taught or mastered.
These days I still touch up on my negotiating skills from a different source called “TV”. I don’t have “must see shows” but the ones I usually watch on a regular basis is ‘Pawn Stars’ on the History Channel. And like my day-to-day, the cast on the show, too, have their shares of negotiation “hits and misses.”
